Tour 1 :- 5th - 6th April 2008, Bristol. Flyght Club 1 - Stu P (Captain), Steve G, Vito V, Grant P, Oscar, John Jelley,Matt B, Possum, Metal Dave Inital seeding B-Tour 12th Game 1 vs Deveon Ultimate 2. Strong victory. slow start from FC but quickly picked up the pace to quickly take the lead. Despite not having Steve G there. Game 2 vs Flump. Another strong victory. with the wind picking up it was perfect for a classic trash zone that they couldnt get passed. on one point pushing them back into their end zone so far Steve managed a callahan despite playing deep deep. Game 3 vs Trigger Happy. Lost 15-14. Our first challenge and that it was. We went down, then came back, we went up 14-12 and got a big case of the red mist in the last 25% of the pitch that lasted well into Sunday the prevented us from scoring. By this time our squad of 9 was at 7 with Stu injured and Matt B down for the count. We played Trigger essentially iron man and lost and Vito to cramps near the end. Sunday Game 4 vs L.Attitude. Loss 15 - 12. We did really well. Luck was really on their side. We threated the cross (it was a 6 v 10 cross I think). Tough game. We can beat them next time. Game 5 vs Kent Open. Victory. We tried zone...they got lucky against it so we tried man. We were trading and decided to go back to zone again and this time the O they'd established was so ingrained into man D they took about 4 points to sort it. By then we were well in the lead and kept it to close it out comfortably. Game 6...best game of the weekend. Trigger again...we fought hard, spirit was the real winner but in the end we narrowly lost paper to rock. Stupid rock. Went home early happy not to sustain more injuries and come back stronger for Tour 2. Final position - 10th B Tour
Strengths - Good cross section of skills in the team. Cool heads, few internal disputes and good team spirit = good weekend. Weaknesses - lacking in numbers only.
Flyght 2 had a mixed weekend this weekend winning 2 and losing 4 games for a final finishing position of 8th in the C-Tour. Not a bad result, and it sets us up for a good Tour 2.
The team consisted of Jono, Drew, Jeff, JJ, Ben, Harp, Vinnie and Topshop, plus two newcomers to Flyght, Beth and James (aka Monkey). This was actually Monkey’s first tournament, but that didn’t stop him putting in a fantastic performance.
Game 1 – Pool game 1 – 16v15 Win against Kent Open 2
What a way to start the weekend. Fresh out of bed on a cold april morning and we get one of the longest games of the whole of Tour. In total this lasted for almost two hours. Both teams played well, but with quite a few mistakes. We began to gel as a team and were in the lead 14-11 as we went into the final stages. They picked up the pace a bit and we ended up being at 15-15. The last few points were all very long, and the final point lasted for almost 10 minutes. It all ended when the pass went up towards Toppers, their guy got a hand to it, but Toppers managed to recover the disc and bring it down for the win.
Game 2 – Pool game 2 –7v15 Loss to ABH-B
A strong team of handlers and tall receivers, so we knew we were going to be up against it. We went into this with a whole one minutes rest from the previous game, so we were feeling it a bit! We came out of the blocks hard, and played the better Ultimate for the first 10 points, being 6-4 up and looking forward to taking the half. Unfortunately our lack of subs came into play and we just began to make some silly errors. They scored about 8 points in a row, going round our zone well. We got a consolation point near the end. With a bit more fitness or a couple of extra pairs of legs we could have taken them, at leas tthat’s the story I’m sticking to!
Game 3 – Pool Game 3 – 13v8 Win against Staffordshire Oatcakes
This team were a combination of Mental Discs, Team Rehab and Airwolf. As such they had a few very skilful players but quite a few weak players as well. Whoever won this game would come second in the pool, meaning a much coveted 1200 start on Sunday as opposed to a 0900 one! They really pushed us to start, throwing some big discs that they managed to pull down. They used their better players well and were up 7-4 and looking to take the half. That’s when we decided that this just wasn’t good enough and we wanted that lie-in! We changed the zone and got the up-deep to come in when the disc was on the line, we marked Bollard out, JJ then took Bollard out! Not intentionally obviously, but when someone as skinny as Bollard collides with JJ it’s going to hurt! All these things help us turn our game around and we stormed on, taking the half and then the game. 1200 start – have it!
So we finished 2nd in our pool behind ABH, so we watched Flyght 1 for a bit and then some of us headed into Clifton for a curry, a beer and numerous sick jokes.
Game 4 – 3v6 Quarter Final – 3v13 Loss to GB Juniors
These guys missed Tour0 and so were in C-Tour when they blatently should have been higher! We knew we were going to struggle and we did. We started well, going 2-0 up and then holding it to 3-3, then they just ran away with it. They used a 5-handler play to break the zone, they were quicker than us when we played man, they pulled down discs from obscene heights, it was comedical. They commented that we’d given them their hardest game so far, and I think that was true. They really had to work for every point and pushed hard on D when we had the disc. Once they gel even more they’ll be awesome ready for Vancouver.
Game 5 – 6v7 Semi Final – 3v13 Loss to Bristol 2
It was in these last two games that our fatigue began to show. We’d not really got anything aim for and our heads went down. We began to get a bit short-tempered and a little rash on the disc and we never really threatened Bristol at all. It was a shame because they were great guys and another time I think we’d have had a closer game. They had a lot of experience and it showed, the deserved the match.
Game 6 – 7v8 Final – 3v13 Loss to Abstract
In a similar vein to the Bristol game, we had our heads down. We weren’t playing bad ultimate, it’s just we struggled to up our game. They were iron-man and usually we’d have upped the pace to tire them, but we really didn’t have it left in us. JJ had hurt his back and the rest of us were struggling. They threw lots of overhead stuff to players that had 6inches (of height that is) on us and we just struggled to respond. We didn’t produce the level of ultimate we had done previously that weekend, but we were glad to be finished.
Not a bad result all things considered. With a few more subs at Tour 2 we should be able to gain promotion.
Congratulations to Topshop who won our team disc for an outstanding performance throughout the weekend (Harp has the disc for you). We all played well though, and I think everyone was pleased with their performance! |
